World Cup Update, June 17

Yesterday's Results:
Germany 4, Portugal 0
Iran 0, Nigeria 0
United States 2, Ghana 1

Three thoughts on the games
- That was about as bad as it could be from Portugal. Ronaldo was clearly not in peak form, they lost one center back to a bit of idiotic play resulting in a red card and another defender to what looked like a pretty nasty injury. Add in the full on collapse in the second half and things do not look good for the Portuguese. However, they will play better, and as Ronaldo continues to heal, they will get more dangerous. Their game against the US is pretty close to a must-win with their current -4 goal differential.

- I frequently remarked the last few days how we hadn't yet seen a tie in this World Cup. Well, Nigeria and Iran cured that. Nigeria looked terrible in their send off game against the USA, and that same Nigeria team apparently showed up again yesterday. Argentina and Bosnia look well poised to move on from Group F to the knockout round.

- For my thoughts on the US-Ghana game, see here.
