Interesting notes:
  • The playoff picture is unchaged from last week. There would be 4 new teams from last year (Indianapolis, Washington, Seattle, and Minnesota)
  • Since the NFL moved to the 4 divisions per conference format in 2002, there has never been more than 8 playoff teams returning from the previous season. The average number of repeat playoff teams is 6.
  • The AFC playoff field is closed. All 6 teams currently in playoff position have qualified for the playoffs. In a related story, 10 of the 16 teams in the AFC have sub-.500 records.
  • The NFC playoff field remains partly open. 4 of the 6 available berths have been filled, but the NFC East division winner and second wild card spot remain available to a combined 5 teams.
  • AFC clinching scenarios:
    • Houston can clinch home field advantage by beating IND. They could fall to 3rd place in the conference with a loss.
    • Denver can clinch home field advantage by beating KC and having HOU lose. They clinch a bye by beating KC. They could fall to the 3rd seed with a loss.
    • New England can clinch home field advantage by beating MIA and having HOU and DEN lose. They can clinch a first round bye with a win and either HOU/DEN losing. They could fall to the 4th seed with a loss.
    • Baltimore can rise from the 4th seed to the 3rd seed with a win over CIN and a NE loss.
    • Indianapolis is locked into the 1st wild card spot. They would win a tiebreaker with Cincinnati with a better record in common games (4-1 vs 3-2 against CLE, KC, MIA, JAX).
    • Cincinnati is locked into the second wild card spot.
  • NFC clinching scenarios:
    • Atlanta has clinched home field advantage.
    • Green Bay clinches a bye with a win over MIN. They could fall to the 3rd seed with a loss.
    • San Francisco clinches a bye with a win over AZ and a GB loss. They clinch the division and the 3rd seed with a win. They could fall to the 5th seed with a loss.
    • Washington and Dallas each clinch the 4th seed with a win in the final game of the regular season.
    • Seattle clinches a bye with a win over STL and losses by GB and SF. They clinch the NFC West division and the 3rd seed with a win and a SF loss. They cannot fall below the first wild card spot.
    • The final wild card spot clinching scenarios are
      • Minnesota gets it with a win over GB
      • Chicago gets it with a win over DET and a MIN loss
      • Washington gets it with a loss to DAL and losses by MIN and CHI
      • The New York Giants get it with a win over PHI and losses by MIN, CHI, and DAL
A Quick Look Ahead to Week 17:

Baltimore at Cincinnati (Sunday, 1:00 PM) - Cincinnati is locked into the second wild card spot no matter what. Baltimore could jump from the 4th seed to the 3rd seed with a win and some help.
Chicago at Detroit (Sunday, 1:00 PM) -  Chicago can get the 6th seed with a win and some help.
Houston at Indianapolis (Sunday, 1:00 PM) - Houston needs this game (or a lot of unlikely help) to keep their top seed. Indianapolis is locked in to their spot no matter what happens in this game.
Philadelphia at New York Giants (Sunday, 1:00 PM) - The Giants need this game and a lot of help to sneak into the playoffs.
Arizona at San Francisco (Sunday, 4:25 PM) - San Francisco needs this game to guarantee the NFC West division crown and keep open the possibility of a first round bye.
St. Louis at Seattle (Sunday, 4:25 PM) - Seattle needs this win to keep alive any chance at winning the NFC West.
Green Bay at Minnesota (Sunday, 4:25 PM) - Green Bay needs this to guarantee themselves a first round bye. Minnesota needs it to secure the 6th seed.
Miami at New England (Sunday, 4:25 PM) - New England needs the win to keep alive any hope of a bye/home field advantage.
Kansas City at Denver (Sunday, 4:25 PM) - Denver needs the win to guarantee a first round bye and keep alive the possibility of home field advantage.
Dallas at Washington (Sunday, 8:20 PM) - The winner wins the NFC East and gets the 4th seed. Dallas is out with a loss, while Washington could still back in with the 6th seed with some help.
