Random NFL Thoughts on Week 6, Part 1

- Which then-5-0 team feels better about itself this morning? The quick answer is the Falcons, as they're now 6-0, while the Texans fell to 5-1. But the Falcons' last 3 games are a 2-point win over 1-4 Carolina (at home!), a 7-point win over an RG3-less Redskins team (for most of the game), and a 3-point win over 1-4 Oakland (at home!). Meanwhile, the Texans were spanked (at home) by the Packer offensive juggernaut we've been expecting all season. Add in how there doesn't seem to be another very good team in the AFC, and I'm not sure that answer is as easy as it first appears.

- Congratulations Cleveland on earning your first win of the season.

- Meanwhile, Cincinnati seems to be clearly regressing. We're seeing why Bill Belichick didn't give the Law Firm more carries as a Patriot, he doesn't scare any defense, as he's never ever going to break a long run. The defense can't stop anyone, and the Andy Dalton to AJ Green show can only do so much.

- St. Louis lost to Miami because their rookie kicker (who was perfect coming into this game) missed 3 field goals, including a 66-yarder as time expired. Now, missing three field goals isn't good, but relying on a 66-yard attempt to tie the game is a good idea, Jeff Fisher? Really? Did you not notice how your game was outside?

- It's hard to understand what happened in the Detroit-Philly game. It looked like Philly was in control, and then Detroit stormed back with 17 points in the 4th quarter, including 10 points in the final 3:32. In a story that will surprise no one, the Eagles turned the ball over 3 times. In a story that should surprise everyone, LeSean McCoy was held by the Detroit defense to 22 yards on 14 carries.

- Remember how I said above that the Texans might be the only very good team in the AFC? You might counter with the Ravens, being that they are 5-1, just like the Texans. You'd be wrong. A good team doesn't give up 441 yards rushing in 2 games, especially not to teams that are a combined 3-8. Now with their best cover cornerback and emotional defensive leader both likely out for the season, Baltimore won't be able to keep this pace up.

- But they did improve to 5-1, thanks largely to Dallas vomiting all over themselves. Dez Bryant dropping a ball right in his hands on the 2 point conversion that would have tied the game with less than a minute left. Then, after Dallas recovers the onside kick (still down 2 points), they get within a couple yards of the edge of their kicker's range with 26 seconds left on a pass interference penalty. Then they run a pass play that gains a whole yard and ends inbounds. By the time they do anything else, there are 5 seconds left and they've just spent their last time out. That leaves their kicker needing to match his career long with a 51-yard field goal to win the game. He missed it.
