NFL Standings, Week 4

Last week I trashed DirecTV in this space, as the feed for the Jaguars-Seahawks game was nothing short of terrible...when it even existed at all. But this past weekend? Totally different. I got to see every moment of Texans-Seahawks, which started out as a curse but turned into a real blessing. Well done, DirecTV, I don't hate you anymore.

A few quick thoughts on the weekend's events:

It couldn't have been put any plainer than that, Texans fans: Matt Schaub will not take you to the Super Bowl. The interception was terrible, but the body language afterwards? Schaub looked hopeless. Your leader, and starting quarterback should never, ever look hopeless. Frustrated? Sure. Angry? No problem. But hopeless? No. People won't follow you if you look beaten like that.

I keep expecting the Giants to pull themselves together and snap out of this funk. But even in their worst moments in the last 6 seasons, I don't think any of their funks have lasted this long.

If Matt Flynn still had any supporters thinking he'd gotten robbed out of 2 starting opportunities going into last weekend, that game against the Redskins should have disbanded them.

Peyton Manning. All I can say is wow.

Baltimore, with a healthy Ray Rice, had 9 rushing attempts against the Bills. They threw the ball 50 times. They used this skewed run-pass ratio despite the fact that their $120 million quarterback a) completed only 50% of his passes and b) threw 5 interceptions. Unbelieveable.

Interesting Notes:
  • The AFC East is the only division without a below-.500 team.
  • The Saints have a 2.5-game lead in their division.
  • Since 1990, 82% of teams that started 4-0 made the playoffs.
A Quick Look Ahead to Week 5:
Seattle at Indianapolis (Sunday 1:00 PM) - The first Andrew Luck vs Russell Wilson match-up.
New Orleans at Chicago (Sunday 1:00 PM) -  Beloved quarterback Drew Brees leads his undefeated squad on the road to battle be-hated quarterback Jay Cutler and the Bears coming off a serious spanking by the Detroit Lions.
Kansas City at Tennessee (Sunday 4:05 PM) - This game lost quite a bit of luster when Jake Locker was knocked out of the Jets game with a long-term injury.
San Diego at Oakland (Sunday 11:35 PM) - No, this game won't be any good, but look at the time. This game was moved from 4:25 PM to allow the grounds crew enough time to switch the field from baseball (since the A's are in the playoffs) to football. It will be broadcast on the NFL Network if you want to watch it (you don't).
